Kia ora parents, students and whānau,
  • A reminder that on Wednesday, the school is closed due to teacher strike action.  Please ensure you've made other arrangements for child this day and we greatly appreciate your support with this.
  • Don't forget to remind your child to make sure their devices are fully charged at the start of the day and to bring their chargers every day please.
  • The field remains wet and muddy, despite the fine weather over the weekend.  Please remind your child that if they're playing on the field at play times, they should bring a spare change of clothes so they can return to class clean and dry.
  • Today was our last sessions for Badminton and Tennis... it's been great to see the kids enjoying themselves as they learnt to get out there and volley.  Next week we will start a new focus for PE, around Winter Sports, so please make sure students have a change of clothes and spare shoes on Mondays from now on.
  • Please also remember that Monday is now our homework day and homework books need to come to school every Monday.
  • Last week we launched the Epic reading app... we are currently working through some issues around this and use of it at home.  Please be patient and stay tuned for updates!
  • Students: don't forget to check the timetables below (and in the whānau rooms) to see what workshops are on each day and make sure you're booking in for these!

Our Visit From a Police Officer

Steve Rumney came in a shared a great presentation about how technological advancements have changed the way he does his job as a scene of crime officer. We really enjoyed being able to ask him questions about his job and hearing his police stories.

Scene of crime officers lift fingerprints from crime scenes and assess potential forensic items such as blood-stained clothing or weapons. They lift, preserve and package evidence.

Scene of crime officers:
  • attend crime scenes and gather, preserve, package and document evidence to help in the investigation of the crime
  • dust for fingerprints, shoeprints, collect trace evidence and DNA.

Our First Guest Speaker for Technological Advances

On Thursday this week, we were lucky to have Corrin Hulls come and talk to us. He was able to show us some great examples of how advances in technology have made things easier in his job.

A fun way to prove how good the advances were was the race we had between the original blood pressure tester (sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope) and the newer automated sphygmomanometer.

There was a huge difference in the time each method took!

Celebrating our Fuel Your Body Meal Challenge

It's taken a week to put this altogether but here's a sneak peek at some of our sharing for our Haepapa Assembly this week: a slideshow of all the pics that were sent through to Ms Matangi from our Fuel Your Body Meal Challenge... as you can see: everyone did really well in thinking about how to create meals that fit the healthy food plate (1/2 fruit/veg; 1/4 protein; 1/4 grains/starchy veg and a side of dairy)... and as you can see: we couldn't have done it without all the fantastic parents that came and helped us (and Mr Broodryk: official taste tester!).

Enjoy...

Water Supply and Conservation

We have been focusing on water supply and conservation. This was relevant to us because of the recent drought in Palmerston North.

Our Stem challenge was to research, design, create and refine a water tower. Our tower needed to hold rainwater and have a valve so that we can release water from the tank.

Sphero Design STEM Challenge

We have been learning about the problem with plastic pollution in our waters and the sea. Students have been designing and testing ways to use a Sphero robot to collect rubbish in the water. We made our first prototype and tested it, then we were able to make changes to our design and test our Mark 2 prototypes another day. There are some great examples of student creativity here and our understanding floatation has really increased!

Week 5, Term 1: Rātaka o te wiki

Check out Slide 2 below for Rataka o te Wiki: What's on this Week...

Some things to remember this week:

  • Often in our learning students are listening to or watching video and audio files to support what we are doing in class.  It would be great if students could bring their own headphones (named) to keep in their trays to help them focus.  Any headphones or ear buds such as what they get with their devices are acceptable (as long as they work).
  • We have house meetings this Wednesday at 2.30pm.  Students will be released from there.
  • Tomorrow we have swimming at Ashhurst.  Please make sure children have their togs, towel and goggles, if needed (Make sure all of these are named and in a bag).
  • Tomorrow morning is also our library day.
  • Homework is due back tomorrow.  Don't forget to come with your homework books.
  • The optional lunchtime swim on Wednesday will be weather dependent.
  • Assembly this Friday is hosted by Kahurangi.

Week 4, Term 1: What's on this week

Check out Slide 2 below for Rataka o te Wiki: What's on this Week...

Some things to remember this week:

  • We are introducing a new mathematics game as part of our programme.  It is called Prodigy and is a fantastic, free, online resource for engaging students in maths through an interactive journey.  Mr Mildenhall emailed all students with the links to get this set up today so students just need to check their school emails to do this.  There is an app available for this, though the game can be accessed through Safari or Chrome.
  • We still have a few students who have not yet signed up for See Saw.  This is a really useful platform for sharing learning with home.  Those students who do not yet have it, need to download the free app as soon as possible: Seesaw Class (Learning Journal), sign in using their google account and enter this code: DKUF PYIX.
  • Tomorrow we have swimming at Ashhurst.  Please make sure children have their togs, towel and goggles, if needed (Make sure all of these are named and in a bag).
  • Tomorrow morning is also our library day.
  • Homework went home on Friday (this will normally be on Tuesdays but we wanted more time to prepare the students for this week).  This week's homework will be due on Tuesday 27th.  The creative project is due on Tuesday in week 6 (This is OPTIONAL).
  • We have our optional lunchtime swim on Wednesday again this week.
  • There is no assembly this week.  Pono Pod's assembly will now be in week 10.
  • Also, for our Year 5 School Council members, don't forget there is a trip on Thursday with Mr Hobbs and Mrs Mayston.

Thinking around shapes...

Today was the last day of our exploratory maths rotations...  Whānau 22 were developing their thinking around shapes and how if we believe in ourselves, and keep trying, we can be successful (and our math brains will grow)!

Groups of four were challenged to build a perfect rectangle, a square and a star with a piece of string.  All the groups have done so well with this over the last few weeks and today, one group succeeded in building the most difficult shape: a star.  Well done to this fantastic group of girls and to all our students who have been learning to think deeply, persevere, and believe in themselves in maths!

Number Visuals

One of the things we have been learning about in maths this term is Number Visuals. We are learning how visualising patterns in numbers helps our brain make connections better. Our students are getting really good at spotting these patterns!

Week 3, Term 1: What's happening this week...

Check out Slide 2 below for Rataka o te Wiki: What's on this Week...

Some things to remember this week:

  • Tomorrow is our first day of swimming at Ashhurst.  Please make sure children have their togs towel and goggles, if needed (Make sure these are named and in a bag).
  • Tomorrow morning is also our library day.
  • Mrs Marshall is still away tomorrow.  If you have any pressing concerns, please see or contact Ana.
  • Our first homework project is due on Friday this week: An A4 or A3 poster about how children are special or unique.
  • We still have a couple of children without hats... school hats are compulsory in terms 1 and 4.  If your child still does not have a school hat, please remedy this as soon as possible.
  • We have our optional lunchtime swim on Wednesday again this week.
  • This Friday our school assembly, hosted by the Aroha Pod.
  • All our lunchtime clubs are underway this week. There is a different club each day that all students can participate in if they wish:
    • Monday - Graphic Design (Ms Matangi)
    • Tuesday - Robotics (Mr Mildenhall)
    • Wednesday - Literary Quiz (Mrs Thompson)
    • Thursday - IT Techie Training (Mrs Hornell)
    • Friday - Garden Club (Mrs Mayston & Mrs Cobham)

Some things to remember:

  • We have an optional lunchtime swim on Wednesday this week.
  • Don't forget to sign up for See Saw if you haven't already.  You need to ensure your child has signed up first using their Whakarongo student email account.  Students will not appear on the class list for See Saw until they have signed up.  Once they're all done, then parents can sign up.  If you have any questions, please see your child's homeroom teacher.
  • This Friday is our first school assembly, hosted by the Navigator Centre.
  • We still have a few children without school hats.  These need to be organised by the end of this week please - just pop into the school office: Year 5 students can purchase the school caps.  Year 4 students wear the bucket hats still.
  • A reminder that all school clothing, including hats, shoes and swimming gear, should be named.  This is especially important at this time of year with swimming.
  • Our lunchtime clubs are starting up this week.  There is a different club each day that all students can participate in if they wish:
    • Monday - Graphic Design (Ms Matangi)
    • Tuesday - Robotics (Mr Mildenhall)
